Meal type:

Nutrisystem meals are either frozen or shelf-stable; this means you simply have to heat them once before eating. You can buy their ready-to-eat diet meals and use fresh foods from the grocery to supplement these. This is what makes Nutrisystem a much more appealing option for dieters. Medifast meals are all precooked and these are in the form of soups, shakes, puddings, etc. They may be low in calories but do not resemble the type of meals you are used to having.

Nutrisystem meals are available at different prices, usually running into $263-$342 a month. Medifast meals are also reasonably priced and you need not buy additional food. You can get Medifast products for low Glycemic, lactose-free, and even vegetarians and these are available for categories like women, men, and diabetics. So, for both Nutrisystem and Medifast meals, there is no need to count the calories or look at the ingredients. The only problem with Medifast meals is that people need time to get used to the sudden drop in carbs.


As far as fitness goes, Nutrisystem has come out with 3 workout DVDs; two for women and one for men. You are provided with a DVD depending on the program you have selected but there are no guidelines on how frequently you must exercise. Medifast offers exercise guidelines alright, but there is no workout program. It simply asks you to work out every day but the duration and frequency depends on you. However, it advises dieters to wait for a couple of weeks before starting exercises. This is because the body may need some time to get adjusted to the sudden cutting down of carbs.

If you consider both Nutrisystem and Medifast diet programs, you will see that both are effective and safe for losing weight. That should be the primary goal for any weight loss program. But, at the same time, it is important to choose a plan that you can stick to. It is not enough to eat healthy meals only for a certain time-period; it is important to inculcate healthy eating habits that will last you a lifetime. 

Nutrisystem meals are wholesome, well-balanced, and nutrient-dense; they are low in trans fats and saturated fats. They will help you shed the extra weight slowly but steadily. If you want very quick results, you should consider Medifast. But the downside is that dieters following such diet programs tend to put the weight back on after 6 months. Weight loss may be fast initially since calorie intake is drastically reduced, but this is not sustainable in the long-term. For making the transition to long-term weight loss you need a balanced diet planner like Nutrisystem. Nutrisystem plans are easier-to-adjust to and follow even for months on end. You might think it’s going to be impossible to find an actual keto-friendly dessert at a fast-food restaurant. You’re preparing to just power through your craving. While it is indeed difficult to find a dessert that you can eat while following the keto diet… it’s definitely not impossible.

In this article, we’re going to list some of your options when heading out to a fast food joint and looking for dessert. We’ll also point you in the right direction in case you’re looking to whip up something sweet at home.

The problem with fast food desserts on keto

There is a fundamental problem you’ll run into when using ‘keto’ and ‘dessert’ in the same sentence – especially when you add ‘fast food’ into the mix. You see, most desserts are very sweet and usually, they’ll contain a ton of sugar. As you may know, a lot of sugar equals a lot of carbs.

That’s where things go wrong since keto is a low-carb diet. So, most of the ‘usual’ desserts have such a high sugar content and should be avoided altogether when you’re on the keto diet – whether you’re looking for fast food or not. 

Keto fast food dessert: your best chances

That being said, there are some exceptions. Let’s take a look at your options when you’re eating out at a fast-food restaurant. 

1. McDonald’s

First up is McDonald’s. Just so we’re clear, all their usual options like ice creams, milkshakes, and any type of cookie or muffin are completely off-limits if you’re looking for a keto dessert.

There is another option however: fruit. 

Fruits are a love/hate kind of food to keto enthusiasts because most of them are not keto-friendly. Most fruits actually contain a lot of carbs. That being said, eating a little bit of fruit is still a better idea than going for a chocolate muffin. 

That brings us to McDonald’s Apple Slices. In small portions, they can be eaten as a dessert while on the keto diet. Your body will not exit ketosis, provided you don’t eat a whole bunch of them.

Sadly, that’s it for McDonald’s. There’s not really any other option, even though their menu lists a lot of different desserts. 

2. Wendy’s

Moving on to another popular fast food joint. Wendy’s actually has a slightly better option compared to McDonald’s – even if it’s also fruit. At Wendy’s, you can order the ‘Berry Burst Fruit Cup’ which, as the name implies, is a cup of berries. 

As we’ve mentioned above, most fruits are not really compatible with a keto diet… but berries are*! Raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries aren’t that high in carbs which makes them safe to eat on keto (in small amounts).

So remember: the Berry Cup from Wendy’s is a great option if you’re looking for a keto fast food dessert.

3. Five Guys (and others)

Other popular fast-food joints have little to no options when craving a keto fast food dessert. It might come down to your own creativity to customize your order and make it keto-friendly.

For example, at Five Guys you could ask them to serve you whipped cream with some strawberries (basically combining two of their milkshake topping options) in a separate bowl. You’ll have a very tasty dessert that’s safe to eat on a keto diet. Of course, you’ll have to specifically ask them for this, as it’s not part of the standard menu.

As you can see, finding a keto-friendly dessert at a fast-food restaurant is rare.

One thing worth mentioning is that you can always opt for a cup of coffee. Some nice, hot coffee with a little bit of whipped cream or milk can also serve as a nice and tasty dessert. As a bonus, you’ll enjoy the extra health benefits of coffee!

Making some keto “fast food” dessert at home

If you’re looking to eat some dessert that is truly keto, the best option might be to create one yourself. It might not exactly be the “fast food” you wanted, but we think it still qualifies – depending on how you look at it.

1. Online recipes

There’s a lot of good recipes to be found on the internet. Think of a keto chocolate cake or low-carb cupcakes. Most of them are not too hard to make, even if you’re not really familiar with baking and/or cooking.

A Reddit user has come up with a weird milkshake alternative as a fast food keto dessert.

2. Weird milkshake alternative

Something else we came across in our search for a keto dessert is this suggestion from a Reddit user. He says that if you’re craving a milkshake, a good alternative is to take some orange soda and add a bit of whipped cream. It sounds disgusting – at least to us – but apparently it’s very tasty and a nice alternative to a regular milkshake.

3. Say cheese

Last but not least, a personal favorite of ours is to have a plate of cheese. A nice small selection of different cheese is a perfectly valid dessert. It’s also very tasty and (depending on the specific cheese) completely keto-friendly.

So if you’re looking for a keto fast food dessert to make at home, some nice cheese might just be the easiest way to go. 


In conclusion, it’s clear that a keto fast food dessert is quite rare, simply because most desserts are very sweet. Sugar and keto don’t go well together.

Which Keto Test Should You Buy?

To measure ketones you need to buy a ketone meter (or blood glucose meter) capable of reading ketones (or keto test strips) from The Lancet or a device like The Lancet that takes blood from your finger with an alcohol swab and disinfects the area.

Blood tests are a complicated process that involves inserting a strip of blood ketone into your meter, slipping a needle into a lancet and pulling your finger to pull blood. Use a ketone blood test instead if you use ketone urine test strips and prick your finger several times a day. A blood keto strip instructs you to prick with your fingers to draw blood from the strip and insert it into the meter.

For diabetics who want to follow a ketogenic diet, a similar blood test method can be used to measure ketones. In addition to blood and urine ketone tests, you can also use a ketone breather but this method is considered to be the least accurate. Self-tests of ketones in urine are considered more accurate than blood ketone tests, and if performed correctly, they can provide more reliable results to determine whether further steps should be taken.

The most accurate way to test ketones is to use a meter which measures blood ketone levels. There are several types of ketometers which monitor ketosis by measuring ketone levels in the blood. If you are constantly on a diet and want super-exact results, you should consider a keto blood meter.

There are two main methods for measuring ketone levels in the body: urine and blood tests. Accurate readings are crucial for ketone levels, just as accurate blood glucose levels are so critical for diabetes and keto that urine tests are not the best way to check ketone levels. The most accurate and reliable method to test ketone levels is testing ketones to confirm the effectiveness of a diet, exercise and wellness plan, especially with a blood meter.

In addition to the ketone blood test, your doctor can order a ketone test to check diabetic ketoacidosis. Urine ketones can be removed to test glucose, and the ketones in the urine reflect the levels of a few hours earlier. One can test the urine ketone level, but is not as precise as a blood ketone test, because ketone levels are reflected in the urine level.

The number registered on your blood meter during the test reflects the ketone level in your body. With the perfect keto test strip, you can find out in just a few seconds whether you have ketosis by measuring ketones in the body and urine. Once you have measured a lot of ketones that travel through your bloodstream to supply energy to your body’s cells, a ketone blood test is very accurate when it comes to how deeply you are involved in ketosis.

So if your ketone levels don’t register in the urine test, it can clear you of ketosis. Although Taboulet2007 is not the gold standard, urine ketone testing is the most accurate way to estimate ketone levels.

The urinary ketone strip is useful in the initial phase of ketogenic nutrition if you want to test the carbohydrate content to get into ketosis. Some people use this test to test whether they are sensitive to certain keto-friendly foods that can negatively affect their progress.

You must have a stock of test strips and a Precision Xtra blood ketone meter. Not all blood ketone test strips are compatible with all devices, so check which ones work with your device before you purchase. Note that Keto Mojo Ketone Test Strip works with any Keto Mojo meter, but you can also buy a complete set ($60) that includes a Lancet device and a Lancet meter worth $10.
